Lymphocytes are a type of white blood cell that plays a crucial role in the body's immune system. They are produced in the bone marrow and can be found circulating in the blood as well as residing in lymphoid tissues such as the lymph nodes, spleen, and thymus. There are three main types of lymphocytes: B cells, T cells, and natural killer cells. B cells produce antibodies that help fight infections, T cells directly attack infected or abnormal cells and coordinate immune responses, while natural killer cells target virus-infected cells and tumor cells. A lymphocyte count is typically measured as part of a complete blood count test to assess immune system function and help diagnose various medical conditions.
A lymphocyte count test measures the number of lymphocytes present in a blood sample. Normal lymphocyte levels in adults typically range from 1,000 to 4,800 lymphocytes per microliter of blood, though reference ranges may vary slightly between laboratories. The test is usually ordered when a healthcare provider suspects an infection, immune system disorder, or blood-related condition. It may also be used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment for certain diseases or to evaluate immune function in patients undergoing chemotherapy or taking immunosuppressive medications.
Elevated lymphocyte counts, known as lymphocytosis, can indicate various conditions including viral infections such as mononucleosis, cytomegalovirus, or hepatitis. Chronic bacterial infections like tuberculosis or pertussis may also cause increased lymphocyte levels. Additionally, certain types of leukemia and lymphomas are characterized by abnormally high lymphocyte counts. On the other hand, low lymphocyte counts, called lymphocytopenia, may result from autoimmune disorders, HIV infection, inherited immune deficiency syndromes, or bone marrow disorders. Certain medications, particularly chemotherapy drugs and corticosteroids, can also decrease lymphocyte numbers.
The lymphocyte count test requires a simple blood draw from a vein, usually in the arm. No special preparation is typically needed before the test, though patients should inform their healthcare provider about any medications they are taking. Results are usually available within a day or two. If abnormal lymphocyte levels are detected, additional testing may be recommended to determine the underlying cause. This might include more detailed immune system panels, bone marrow examination, or imaging studies depending on the clinical situation and other findings from the complete blood count.
