UK Researchers Add PrecivityAD2 Blood Test to Alzheimer's Diagnostic Pathway
Hemoglobin A1c, commonly known as HbA1c or glycated hemoglobin, is a crucial blood test used to measure average blood sugar levels over the past two to three months. This test is essential for diagnosing diabetes and prediabetes, as well as monitoring how well blood sugar is being controlled in people already diagnosed with diabetes. Unlike regular blood glucose tests that provide a snapshot of sugar levels at a single moment, HbA1c offers a broader picture of long-term glucose control. The test measures the percentage of hemoglobin proteins in red blood cells that have glucose attached to them, which occurs naturally when blood sugar levels are elevated over time.
The HbA1c test works because red blood cells live for approximately three months in the bloodstream. During this time, glucose in the blood binds to hemoglobin in a process called glycation. The higher the blood glucose levels, the more glucose attaches to hemoglobin. When red blood cells die and are replaced, the HbA1c level reflects the average amount of glucose present during the lifespan of those cells. This makes the test particularly valuable because it is not affected by short-term fluctuations in blood sugar caused by recent meals, stress, or illness.
For diagnostic purposes, HbA1c results are interpreted using specific ranges. A normal HbA1c level is below 5.7 percent, indicating no diabetes. Levels between 5.7 and 6.4 percent suggest prediabetes, a condition where blood sugar is higher than normal but not yet high enough to be classified as diabetes. An HbA1c level of 6.5 percent or higher on two separate tests indicates diabetes. For people already diagnosed with diabetes, the target HbA1c level is typically below 7 percent, though individual targets may vary based on age, overall health, and other factors as determined by healthcare providers.
The HbA1c test offers several advantages over traditional fasting blood glucose tests. Patients do not need to fast before the test, and it can be performed at any time of day, making it more convenient. The test provides a more comprehensive assessment of blood sugar control and is less affected by day-to-day variability. However, certain conditions can affect the accuracy of HbA1c results, including anemia, blood loss, pregnancy, certain hemoglobin variants, and recent blood transfusions. In such cases, alternative testing methods may be recommended.
Regular HbA1c testing is recommended for diabetes management, typically every three to six months depending on the type of diabetes, treatment plan, and how well blood sugar is controlled. The test helps healthcare providers adjust treatment strategies and helps patients understand whether their diabetes management plan is working effectively. Maintaining HbA1c levels within the target range significantly reduces the risk of diabetes-related complications such as nerve damage, kidney disease, eye problems, and cardiovascular disease. Anyone with risk factors for diabetes, including family history, obesity, or sedentary lifestyle, should discuss HbA1c testing with their healthcare provider.
