Lymphocytes are a type of white blood cell that play a crucial role in the body's immune system. They help protect against infections, diseases, and foreign substances. A lymphocyte count test measures the number of these cells in your blood and is typically part of a complete blood count panel. Understanding your lymphocyte levels can provide important information about your overall health and immune function.
There are three main types of lymphocytes: B cells, T cells, and natural killer cells. B cells produce antibodies that help fight bacteria and toxins, while T cells directly attack infected or abnormal cells and help coordinate the immune response. Natural killer cells target and destroy virus-infected cells and cancer cells. When you have a lymphocyte count test, the laboratory measures the total number of these cells, though additional specialized tests can determine the specific types and their proportions.
Normal lymphocyte counts typically range from 1,000 to 4,800 lymphocytes per microliter of blood in adults, though this can vary slightly between laboratories. High lymphocyte counts, called lymphocytosis, may indicate viral infections such as mononucleosis, certain bacterial infections, or sometimes more serious conditions like leukemia or lymphoma. Low lymphocyte counts, known as lymphocytopenia, can result from conditions that damage the bone marrow, autoimmune disorders, certain medications, or diseases like HIV that specifically target lymphocytes.
Your doctor may order a lymphocyte count if you have signs of infection, unexplained fatigue, fever, swollen lymph nodes, or other symptoms suggesting immune system problems. The test requires a simple blood draw from a vein, usually in your arm. No special preparation is typically needed, though you should inform your healthcare provider about any medications you are taking, as some drugs can affect lymphocyte levels. Results are usually available within a day or two, and abnormal findings often require follow-up testing to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment.
