Hepatitis B core antibody indicates past or current infection. Healthcare providers use these test results together with clinical evaluation to make treatment decisions and provide appropriate counseling about preventing transmission to others.
Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent hepatitis B infection. Blood tests can confirm whether vaccination has been successful by checking for the presence of hepatitis B surface antibodies. People at higher risk of infection, including healthcare workers, individuals with multiple sexual partners, injection drug users, and those living with someone who has hepatitis B, should undergo screening tests even if they have no symptoms. Early detection through laboratory testing allows for timely medical intervention and helps prevent the spread of infection to others.
