Blood-Based Breast Cancer Detection Shows Value for Patients and Healthcare

Hemoglobin A1c, commonly abbreviated as HbA1c, is a laboratory test that measures the average blood sugar level over the past two to three months. This test is essential for diagnosing and monitoring diabetes, as it provides a long-term view of blood glucose control rather than just a snapshot of a single moment. The test measures the percentage of hemoglobin proteins in red blood cells that have glucose attached to them. Since red blood cells live for approximately three months, the HbA1c test reflects the average glucose levels during that period.

For people without diabetes, a normal HbA1c level is typically below 5.7 percent. A level between 5.7 and 6.4 percent indicates prediabetes, which means blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be classified as diabetes. An HbA1c level of 6.5 percent or higher on two separate tests indicates diabetes. For those already diagnosed with diabetes, healthcare providers usually recommend keeping HbA1c levels below 7 percent, though individual targets may vary based on age, overall health, and other factors.

The HbA1c test offers several advantages over regular blood glucose testing. It does not require fasting, can be performed at any time of day, and is not affected by short-term factors like stress, illness, or recent meals. This makes it a convenient and reliable tool for both diagnosis and ongoing diabetes management. However, certain conditions can affect the accuracy of the test, including anemia, recent blood loss, certain hemoglobin variants, kidney disease, and liver disease. People with these conditions may need alternative testing methods.

Healthcare providers typically recommend HbA1c testing at least twice a year for people with diabetes who are meeting treatment goals and have stable blood sugar control. Those who have changed their treatment plan or are not meeting their goals may need testing more frequently, such as every three months. The test is performed using a simple blood sample, either from a vein or a finger stick, and results are usually available within a few days. Regular monitoring helps individuals and their healthcare teams make informed decisions about diabetes management and treatment adjustments.
