Hemoglobin is a crucial protein found in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. When hemoglobin levels fall below normal ranges, a condition called anemia develops. Anemia can cause various symptoms including fatigue, weakness, pale skin, shortness of breath, dizziness, and cold hands and feet. Understanding your hemoglobin levels through laboratory testing is essential for diagnosing and monitoring anemia and other blood-related conditions.

A complete blood count, or CBC, is the primary laboratory test used to measure hemoglobin levels. This common blood test provides detailed information about the different types of cells in your blood, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. The hemoglobin measurement is typically reported in grams per deciliter. Normal hemoglobin ranges vary by age and gender, with adult men generally having levels between 13.5 to 17.5 grams per deciliter and adult women having levels between 12.0 to 15.5 grams per deciliter. Children and pregnant women have different reference ranges.

Low hemoglobin levels can result from numerous causes. These include nutritional deficiencies, particularly iron, vitamin B12, or folate deficiency, which are among the most common reasons for anemia. Chronic diseases such as kidney disease, cancer, or inflammatory conditions can also affect hemoglobin production. Blood loss from menstruation, gastrointestinal bleeding, or surgery may lead to decreased hemoglobin. Additionally, certain genetic disorders like sickle cell disease or thalassemia can impact hemoglobin structure and function. Some medications and bone marrow disorders may also contribute to low hemoglobin levels.

When a hemoglobin test shows abnormal results, your healthcare provider may order additional laboratory tests to determine the underlying cause. These follow-up tests might include iron studies to check iron levels and iron-binding capacity, vitamin B12 and folate measurements, reticulocyte count to assess how quickly your body is producing new red blood cells, and peripheral blood smear examination to evaluate red blood cell appearance. In some cases, more specialized tests such as hemoglobin electrophoresis or bone marrow biopsy may be necessary to identify specific blood disorders.

Preparing for a hemoglobin test is generally straightforward, as it typically requires no special preparation. The blood sample is usually drawn from a vein in your arm, and the procedure takes only a few minutes. Results are usually available within a day or two. If your hemoglobin levels are abnormal, it is important to work with your healthcare provider to identify the cause and develop an appropriate treatment plan, which may include dietary changes, supplements, medications, or treatment of underlying conditions affecting your blood cell production.
