Since red blood cells live for approximately three months, the HbA1c test provides a long-term picture of blood glucose control, making it more informative than a single blood glucose measurement taken at one point in time.
The HbA1c test serves multiple important purposes in healthcare. It is primarily used to diagnose type 2 diabetes and prediabetes in adults. For people already diagnosed with diabetes, the test helps monitor how well their blood sugar is being controlled through diet, exercise, and medication. Healthcare providers typically recommend testing HbA1c at least twice a year for patients whose diabetes is well-controlled, and more frequently for those whose treatment plans have changed or who are not meeting their blood sugar targets.
Understanding HbA1c results is straightforward. For people without diabetes, a normal HbA1c level is below 5.7 percent. A result between 5.7 and 6.4 percent indicates prediabetes, which means blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be classified as diabetes. An HbA1c level of 6.5 percent or higher on two separate tests indicates diabetes. For most adults with diabetes, the general target is to maintain an HbA1c level below 7 percent, though individual targets may vary based on age, overall health, and other factors.
The HbA1c test offers several advantages over traditional blood glucose testing. It does not require fasting before the blood draw, making it more convenient for patients. The test is not affected by short-term factors like recent meals, stress, or illness that can cause temporary spikes or drops in blood sugar. Additionally, it provides a comprehensive view of blood sugar control that cannot be obtained from daily glucose monitoring alone. However, certain conditions such as anemia, hemoglobin variants, recent blood transfusions, or kidney disease may affect the accuracy of HbA1c results, and alternative testing methods may be needed in these cases.
