Hemoglobin A1c, commonly known as HbA1c or glycated hemoglobin, is a laboratory test that measures the average blood sugar levels over the past two to three months. This test is essential for diagnosing diabetes and monitoring how well blood sugar is being controlled in people who already have diabetes. Unlike regular blood glucose tests that provide a snapshot of sugar levels at a single moment, the HbA1c test gives healthcare providers a broader picture of long-term glucose control. The test measures the percentage of hemoglobin proteins in red blood cells that have glucose attached to them, which occurs naturally when sugar circulates in the blood.
The HbA1c test is particularly valuable because it does not require fasting and can be performed at any time of day. For diagnosis, an HbA1c level of 6.5 percent or higher on two separate tests indicates diabetes, while levels between 5.7 and 6.4 percent suggest prediabetes, a condition where blood sugar is higher than normal but not yet high enough to be classified as diabetes. Normal HbA1c levels are below 5.7 percent. For people already diagnosed with diabetes, the target HbA1c level is typically below 7 percent, though individual goals may vary based on age, overall health, and other factors.
Regular HbA1c testing helps people with diabetes and their healthcare providers make informed decisions about treatment plans. By tracking these results over time, adjustments can be made to medications, diet, and exercise routines to better manage blood sugar levels. Most people with diabetes should have their HbA1c tested at least twice a year if their blood sugar is stable and meeting treatment goals, or more frequently if treatment plans change or if blood sugar is not well controlled.
Several factors can affect HbA1c test results, making them less accurate in certain situations. Conditions that affect red blood cell turnover, such as anemia, recent blood loss, or blood transfusions, can influence results. Certain genetic variants of hemoglobin and kidney or liver disease may also impact the accuracy of the test. In these cases, healthcare providers may use alternative tests or interpret results differently. Despite these limitations, the HbA1c test remains one of the most important tools for diabetes diagnosis and management.
