Hemoglobin is a crucial protein found in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body and returns carbon dioxide back to the lungs for elimination. When hemoglobin levels fall below normal ranges, a condition known as anemia develops. Understanding hemoglobin levels through laboratory testing is essential for diagnosing various health conditions and monitoring overall wellness.

Normal hemoglobin ranges vary based on age and gender. For adult men, the typical range is 13.5 to 17.5 grams per deciliter, while adult women generally have levels between 12.0 to 15.5 grams per deciliter. Children and pregnant women have different reference ranges. Hemoglobin levels are typically measured as part of a complete blood count, which is one of the most common laboratory tests ordered by healthcare providers. This test requires a simple blood draw and provides valuable information about blood health.

Low hemoglobin levels can result from numerous causes including nutritional deficiencies, particularly iron, vitamin B12, or folate deficiency. Other causes include chronic diseases, kidney problems, bone marrow disorders, blood loss from injury or surgery, and certain inherited conditions like sickle cell disease or thalassemia. Symptoms of low hemoglobin may include fatigue, weakness, pale skin, shortness of breath, dizziness, and cold hands and feet. When laboratory results indicate low hemoglobin, additional testing may be necessary to determine the underlying cause and guide appropriate treatment.

High hemoglobin levels are less common but can occur in people living at high altitudes, smokers, or those with certain medical conditions such as polycythemia vera, chronic lung disease, or dehydration. Elevated hemoglobin can thicken the blood and increase the risk of blood clots. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may range from lifestyle modifications to specific medical interventions. Regular monitoring through laboratory testing helps ensure hemoglobin levels remain within healthy ranges and allows for early detection of potential health problems.
