Hemoglobin A1c, also known as HbA1c or glycated hemoglobin, is a blood test that measures the average blood sugar levels over the past two to three months. The A1c test results are reported as a percentage. For people without diabetes, a normal A1c level is below 5.7 percent. An A1c level between 5.7 and 6.4 percent indicates prediabetes, which means blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be classified as diabetes. An A1c level of 6.5 percent or higher on two separate tests indicates diabetes. For people already diagnosed with diabetes, the general target is to maintain an A1c level below 7 percent, though individual targets may vary based on age, overall health, and other factors. Lower A1c levels generally indicate better blood sugar control and lower risk of diabetes-related complications.
One of the main advantages of the A1c test is that it does not require fasting, so it can be done at any time of day. The test is performed using a simple blood sample drawn from a vein in the arm. Results are usually available within a few days. However, certain conditions can affect the accuracy of A1c results. People with certain types of anemia, recent blood loss, or blood transfusions may have inaccurate results. Certain genetic variations in hemoglobin can also interfere with the test. In such cases, healthcare providers may use alternative tests to assess blood sugar control.
