The test works by measuring the percentage of hemoglobin proteins in red blood cells that have glucose attached to them. Since red blood cells typically live for about three months, the test reflects average glucose exposure during that period.
For people without diabetes, a normal HbA1c level is typically below 5.7 percent. A result between 5.7 and 6.4 percent indicates prediabetes, which means blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be classified as diabetes. An HbA1c level of 6.5 percent or higher on two separate tests indicates diabetes. For those already diagnosed with diabetes, the general treatment goal is to maintain HbA1c levels below 7 percent, though individual targets may vary based on age, overall health, and other medical conditions.
The HbA1c test offers several advantages over traditional glucose monitoring. Patients do not need to fast before the test, and it can be performed at any time of day. The test is not affected by short-term factors such as stress, illness, or recent meals, making it a more stable indicator of long-term glucose control. This makes it particularly useful for assessing how well diabetes treatment plans are working and whether adjustments to medication, diet, or lifestyle are needed.
Regular HbA1c testing is recommended for people with diabetes, typically every three to six months depending on how well their condition is controlled. The test is also used as a screening tool for people at risk of developing diabetes, including those with a family history of the disease, obesity, or other risk factors. By providing a comprehensive view of blood sugar management, the HbA1c test helps patients and healthcare providers make informed decisions about diabetes prevention and treatment strategies.
