Hemoglobin A1c, commonly abbreviated as HbA1c, is a crucial blood test used primarily to diagnose and monitor diabetes mellitus. This test measures the percentage of hemoglobin proteins in red blood cells that have glucose molecules attached to them. Since red blood cells typically live for about three months, the HbA1c test provides an average picture of blood sugar levels over the past two to three months, making it more informative than a single fasting glucose measurement that only reflects blood sugar at one point in time.

For people without diabetes, normal HbA1c levels are generally below 5.7 percent. Levels between 5.7 and 6.4 percent indicate prediabetes, a condition where blood sugar is higher than normal but not yet high enough to be classified as diabetes. An HbA1c level of 6.5 percent or higher on two separate tests typically confirms a diagnosis of diabetes. For individuals already diagnosed with diabetes, the test helps healthcare providers assess how well blood sugar is being controlled and whether treatment plans need adjustment.

The HbA1c test offers several advantages over traditional glucose monitoring methods. It does not require fasting before the blood draw, making it more convenient for patients. The test is relatively unaffected by short-term fluctuations in blood sugar caused by stress, illness, or recent meals, providing a more stable long-term measurement. For people managing diabetes, regular HbA1c testing, usually every three to six months, helps track the effectiveness of medications, diet, and lifestyle changes in controlling blood glucose levels.

Healthcare providers use HbA1c results to set individualized treatment goals for patients with diabetes. While a target of less than 7 percent is common for many adults with diabetes, goals may vary based on age, overall health, pregnancy status, and the presence of other medical conditions. Lower targets may be appropriate for younger, healthier individuals, while slightly higher targets might be safer for older adults or those with complications.
