Fibrinogen is a crucial protein produced by the liver that plays a vital role in blood clotting. When a blood vessel is injured, fibrinogen is converted into fibrin, which forms a mesh-like network that helps create a stable blood clot. This process is essential for stopping bleeding and initiating wound healing. A fibrinogen test measures the amount of this protein in your blood and is often ordered when doctors suspect problems with blood clotting, excessive bleeding, or clotting disorders.

The fibrinogen test is commonly used to evaluate patients who experience unexplained bleeding, easy bruising, or excessive clotting. It is particularly important before surgical procedures to ensure proper clotting function and reduce the risk of complications. The test may also be ordered to monitor patients with liver disease, since the liver produces fibrinogen, or to assess those with disseminated intravascular coagulation, a serious condition where blood clots form throughout the body's small blood vessels. Additionally, fibrinogen levels may be measured as part of a comprehensive coagulation panel alongside other clotting tests.

Normal fibrinogen levels typically range from 200 to 400 milligrams per deciliter of blood, though reference ranges may vary slightly between laboratories. Low fibrinogen levels, called hypofibrinogenemia, can result from liver disease, malnutrition, certain cancers, or inherited disorders. This condition increases the risk of excessive bleeding. High fibrinogen levels, known as hyperfibrinogenemia, may indicate acute inflammation, infection, pregnancy, or conditions that increase clot formation risk such as stroke or heart disease. Fibrinogen is considered an acute phase reactant, meaning its levels rise during inflammation or tissue injury.

The fibrinogen test requires a blood sample drawn from a vein, usually in the arm. No special preparation is typically needed, though patients should inform their healthcare provider about any medications they are taking, particularly blood thinners, as these can affect results. The test results help doctors diagnose bleeding disorders, assess clotting function, and guide treatment decisions for various conditions affecting blood coagulation.
