Urinalysis is one of the most common laboratory tests performed to evaluate overall health and diagnose various medical conditions. This comprehensive test examines the physical, chemical, and microscopic properties of urine to detect abnormalities that may indicate kidney disease, urinary tract infections, diabetes, liver problems, and other health issues. Healthcare providers often order urinalysis as part of routine health screenings, during pregnancy checkups, before surgical procedures, or when patients present with symptoms such as abdominal pain, back pain, painful urination, or blood in the urine.

The urinalysis test consists of three main components. The visual examination assesses the color, clarity, and concentration of urine. Normal urine is typically pale to dark yellow and clear, while abnormal colors or cloudiness may suggest various conditions. The chemical analysis uses a dipstick coated with special chemicals that change color when they contact specific substances in urine. This portion tests for the presence and levels of protein, glucose, ketones, blood, bilirubin, urobilinogen, nitrites, leukocyte esterase, and measures the pH and specific gravity of the sample. The microscopic examination involves viewing a urine sample under a microscope to identify cells, crystals, bacteria, yeast, parasites, and casts that may be present.

Preparing for a urinalysis typically requires minimal effort from patients. In most cases, no special preparation is needed, though some healthcare providers may request a first-morning urine sample for certain tests. Patients should inform their doctor about all medications and supplements they are taking, as some substances can affect test results. The collection process usually involves providing a clean-catch midstream urine sample in a sterile container. This means cleaning the genital area before urination, starting to urinate into the toilet, then collecting the middle portion of the urine stream in the container without stopping the flow.

Abnormal urinalysis results can indicate various health conditions. Elevated protein levels may suggest kidney damage or disease, while glucose in urine can indicate diabetes or problems with blood sugar regulation. The presence of blood cells might point to kidney disease, urinary tract infections, or bladder problems. White blood cells and bacteria typically indicate an infection somewhere in the urinary system. Crystals in urine may suggest kidney stones or metabolic disorders. However, abnormal results do not always mean a serious problem exists, as factors like diet, hydration status, medications, and physical activity can temporarily affect urine composition. When abnormalities are detected, healthcare providers typically order additional tests to confirm a diagnosis and determine appropriate treatment.
