Hepatitis B is a viral infection that affects the liver and can cause both acute and chronic disease. The hepatitis B virus is transmitted through contact with infected blood or other body fluids. The alanine aminotransferase test, or ALT, is particularly important as elevated levels suggest liver inflammation or damage. Other tests may include imaging studies and sometimes a liver biopsy to evaluate the extent of liver damage.
Regular laboratory monitoring is essential for people with chronic hepatitis B infection, even if they feel well and have no symptoms. Testing helps doctors determine when to start treatment, monitor treatment effectiveness, and watch for signs of liver disease progression. Early detection through laboratory testing and appropriate medical management can prevent serious complications such as cirrhosis and liver cancer. Vaccination is available to prevent hepatitis B infection, and post-vaccination testing can confirm that a person has developed protective antibodies.
