Hemoglobin A1c, commonly abbreviated as HbA1c, is a laboratory test that measures the average blood sugar levels over the past two to three months. This test is essential for diagnosing and monitoring diabetes. Unlike regular blood glucose tests that provide a snapshot of sugar levels at a single moment, HbA1c gives a broader picture of how well blood sugar has been controlled over time. The test measures the percentage of hemoglobin proteins in red blood cells that have glucose attached to them. Since red blood cells live for about three months, the test reflects the average glucose exposure during that period.

For people without diabetes, normal HbA1c levels typically fall below 5.7 percent. Levels between 5.7 and 6.4 percent indicate prediabetes, a condition where blood sugar is higher than normal but not yet high enough to be classified as diabetes. An HbA1c level of 6.5 percent or higher on two separate tests indicates diabetes. For individuals already diagnosed with diabetes, the target HbA1c level is usually below 7 percent, though this target may vary depending on individual health factors and should be determined by a healthcare provider.

The HbA1c test offers several advantages over traditional glucose testing. It does not require fasting, can be performed at any time of day, and is less affected by short-term factors like stress, illness, or recent meals. This makes it a convenient and reliable tool for both diagnosis and ongoing management. Healthcare providers typically recommend testing HbA1c at least twice a year for people with diabetes who are meeting treatment goals, and more frequently for those whose treatment has changed or who are not meeting their targets.

Understanding HbA1c results helps people with diabetes and their healthcare teams make informed decisions about treatment plans, including medication adjustments, dietary changes, and lifestyle modifications. Lowering HbA1c levels, even by small amounts, can significantly reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications such as nerve damage, kidney disease, eye problems, and cardiovascular disease. Regular monitoring through HbA1c testing is a cornerstone of effective diabetes management and prevention of long-term health complications.
