Hemoglobin A1c, also known as HbA1c or glycated hemoglobin, is a laboratory test that measures the average blood sugar levels over the past two to three months. This test is essential for diagnosing diabetes and monitoring how well blood sugar is controlled in people with diabetes. When glucose in the blood binds to hemoglobin in red blood cells, it forms glycated hemoglobin. Since red blood cells live for approximately three months, the A1c test provides a long-term picture of blood sugar control, unlike daily glucose tests that only show levels at a single point in time.

The A1c test is typically recommended for adults over 45 years of age as a screening tool for diabetes, or earlier for those with risk factors such as being overweight, having a family history of diabetes, or leading a sedentary lifestyle. For people already diagnosed with diabetes, the test is usually performed two to four times per year to assess treatment effectiveness. The test requires a simple blood sample and does not require fasting, making it convenient for patients. Results are reported as a percentage, with normal levels below 5.7 percent, prediabetes indicated by levels between 5.7 and 6.4 percent, and diabetes diagnosed at 6.5 percent or higher.

For individuals managing diabetes, the A1c test serves as a valuable tool to evaluate whether current treatment plans are working effectively. Most diabetes treatment guidelines recommend maintaining A1c levels below 7 percent to reduce the risk of complications, though individual targets may vary based on age, overall health, and other factors.
