Hemoglobin A1c, commonly known as HbA1c or glycated hemoglobin, is an important laboratory test used to monitor blood sugar control over time. This test measures the percentage of hemoglobin proteins in red blood cells that have glucose attached to them. Because red blood cells typically live for about three months, the HbA1c test provides an average picture of blood sugar levels over the past two to three months. This makes it different from daily blood glucose tests, which only show sugar levels at a single moment in time.

The HbA1c test is primarily used to diagnose and monitor diabetes. For diagnosis, an HbA1c level of 6.5 percent or higher on two separate tests indicates diabetes, while a level between 5.7 and 6.4 percent suggests prediabetes. For people already diagnosed with diabetes, the test helps healthcare providers assess how well blood sugar is being controlled and whether treatment plans need adjustment. Most diabetes management guidelines recommend that people with diabetes aim for an HbA1c level below 7 percent, though individual targets may vary based on age, overall health, and other factors.

The test is performed using a simple blood sample, which can be taken at any time of day and does not require fasting. This convenience makes it easier for patients compared to other diabetes tests. The blood sample is sent to a laboratory where specialized equipment measures the percentage of glycated hemoglobin. Results are typically available within a few days, depending on the laboratory.

Several factors can affect HbA1c test results and should be considered when interpreting them. Conditions that affect red blood cell lifespan, such as anemia, recent blood loss, or certain genetic blood disorders, can lead to inaccurate results. Kidney disease, liver disease, and certain medications may also influence test values. People with these conditions may need alternative testing methods or more frequent monitoring. Additionally, HbA1c levels can vary slightly between different laboratories, so it is best to have the test performed at the same laboratory when tracking changes over time. Regular HbA1c testing, typically every three to six months for people with diabetes, helps ensure effective management of blood sugar levels and reduces the risk of diabetes-related complications.
