Hepatitis B is a viral infection that affects the liver and can cause both acute and chronic disease. The hepatitis B virus is transmitted through contact with infected blood or other body fluids. Laboratory testing plays a crucial role in diagnosing hepatitis B infection and monitoring disease progression. The primary screening test is the hepatitis B surface antigen test, which detects the presence of the virus in the blood. If this test is positive, additional tests are performed to determine whether the infection is acute or chronic and to assess liver function. These include tests for hepatitis B surface antibody, hepatitis B core antibody, and hepatitis B e antigen. Liver function tests measuring enzymes such as ALT and AST help evaluate liver damage, while viral load testing quantifies the amount of virus present in the blood.

For chronic hepatitis B patients, regular monitoring through laboratory tests is essential. Doctors typically order periodic blood tests to check viral load levels, liver enzyme levels, and markers of liver function. These tests help determine whether antiviral treatment is necessary and how well treatment is working. In some cases, additional tests such as liver biopsy or non-invasive imaging studies may be recommended to assess the extent of liver damage or fibrosis.

Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent hepatitis B infection. Post-vaccination testing can confirm that a person has developed protective antibodies against the virus. The hepatitis B surface antibody test is used to verify immunity following vaccination or recovery from infection. Testing is particularly important for healthcare workers, people with chronic liver disease, and others at high risk of exposure to determine if booster doses are needed. Early detection through laboratory testing allows for timely medical intervention and helps prevent transmission to others.
