Chronic Hepatitis: Understanding Laboratory Tests and Diagnosis

Gamma-glutamyltransferase, commonly known as GGT, is an enzyme found primarily in the liver, bile ducts, and kidneys. A GGT blood test measures the level of this enzyme in your blood and is used to detect problems with the liver or bile ducts. The test is particularly useful for identifying liver damage caused by alcohol consumption or bile duct obstruction. Healthcare providers often order this test when someone shows symptoms of liver disease such as jaundice, dark urine, nausea, or abdominal pain.

The GGT test is frequently ordered alongside other liver function tests to provide a complete picture of liver health. When GGT levels are elevated along with alkaline phosphatase, it typically indicates a problem with the bile ducts or liver rather than bone disease. The test is especially sensitive to detecting liver damage from alcohol abuse, making it a valuable tool for monitoring alcohol-related liver disease. Normal GGT levels vary slightly between laboratories, but generally range from 0 to 30 international units per liter for women and 0 to 51 international units per liter for men.

Elevated GGT levels can indicate various conditions affecting the liver and bile ducts. Common causes include chronic alcohol consumption, fatty liver disease, hepatitis, cirrhosis, bile duct obstruction, and certain medications that affect the liver. Conditions such as diabetes, heart failure, and pancreatitis can also cause increased GGT levels. However, elevated GGT alone does not pinpoint a specific diagnosis, which is why doctors typically evaluate it alongside other test results and clinical findings.

Preparing for a GGT test usually requires fasting for at least eight hours before the blood draw, though your healthcare provider will give you specific instructions. You should inform your doctor about all medications and supplements you take, as some can affect test results. The blood sample is collected through a standard venipuncture procedure from a vein in your arm. Results are typically available within a few days, and your healthcare provider will interpret them in the context of your overall health status and other laboratory findings to determine if further evaluation or treatment is needed.
