Thyroid Stimulating Hormone, commonly known as TSH, is a crucial hormone produced by the pituitary gland that regulates thyroid function. The TSH test is one of the most frequently ordered laboratory tests for evaluating thyroid health. This simple blood test measures the amount of TSH in your bloodstream and helps healthcare providers determine whether your thyroid gland is functioning properly. The thyroid gland produces hormones that control metabolism, energy levels, body temperature, and many other vital functions throughout the body.

When you have a TSH test, your doctor is checking how well your thyroid and pituitary glands are working together. The pituitary gland releases TSH to signal the thyroid to produce thyroid hormones called T3 and T4. If thyroid hormone levels are low, the pituitary releases more TSH to stimulate the thyroid. Conversely, if thyroid hormone levels are high, the pituitary reduces TSH production. This feedback system helps maintain proper hormone balance in your body.

TSH testing is typically recommended when you experience symptoms that suggest thyroid problems. These symptoms may include unexplained weight changes, fatigue, difficulty sleeping, changes in heart rate, sensitivity to temperature, hair loss, dry skin, or mood changes. The test is also used to monitor people already diagnosed with thyroid disorders and to assess the effectiveness of thyroid medication. Pregnant women, newborns, and people with a family history of thyroid disease may also need TSH testing.

The TSH test requires a simple blood draw from a vein in your arm. No special preparation is usually needed, though some doctors may recommend having the test done in the morning since TSH levels can fluctuate throughout the day. Normal TSH levels typically range from 0.4 to 4.0 milli-international units per liter, though reference ranges may vary slightly between laboratories. High TSH levels generally indicate an underactive thyroid, or hypothyroidism, while low TSH levels suggest an overactive thyroid, or hyperthyroidism. Your healthcare provider will interpret your results in context with your symptoms and may order additional thyroid tests if needed to confirm a diagnosis and develop an appropriate treatment plan.
