Common symptoms include a frequent urge to urinate, burning sensation during urination, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, and pelvic pain. While most UTIs affect the lower urinary tract, particularly the bladder and urethra, more serious infections can spread to the kidneys and cause complications if left untreated.
Laboratory testing plays a crucial role in diagnosing urinary tract infections and determining the most effective treatment approach. The most common initial test is a urinalysis, which examines a urine sample for signs of infection such as white blood cells, red blood cells, bacteria, and nitrites. This test can often provide quick results that help healthcare providers make initial treatment decisions. For a more definitive diagnosis, a urine culture may be performed, which involves growing bacteria from the urine sample in a laboratory setting. This test not only confirms the presence of bacteria but also identifies the specific type of organism causing the infection.
The urine culture test is particularly valuable because it includes antibiotic sensitivity testing, also known as susceptibility testing. This process determines which antibiotics will be most effective against the specific bacteria causing the infection. Given the growing concern about antibiotic resistance, this information is essential for prescribing the most appropriate medication and avoiding unnecessary use of broad-spectrum antibiotics. The culture typically takes 24 to 48 hours to complete, as the bacteria need time to grow in controlled laboratory conditions.
For people experiencing recurrent UTIs or complicated infections, additional laboratory tests may be recommended. These can include blood tests to check kidney function and assess whether the infection has spread to the bloodstream. Imaging studies, though not laboratory tests per se, may also be ordered to examine the urinary tract for structural abnormalities that could be contributing to repeated infections. Early detection and appropriate treatment based on accurate laboratory results help prevent complications such as kidney damage, sepsis, or chronic kidney disease, making timely testing an important aspect of managing urinary tract health.
