Hemoglobin A1c, commonly known as HbA1c or glycated hemoglobin, is a crucial laboratory test used to monitor long-term blood sugar control in people with diabetes. Since red blood cells typically live for about three months, the HbA1c test provides an average picture of blood glucose levels over the past two to three months. Unlike daily blood sugar tests that show glucose levels at a specific moment, HbA1c gives healthcare providers and patients a broader view of how well diabetes is being managed over time.
The HbA1c test is performed using a simple blood sample, which can be drawn at any time of day without requiring fasting. This convenience makes it easier for patients compared to other glucose tests. The result is reported as a percentage, with higher percentages indicating higher average blood glucose levels. For most adults with diabetes, the target HbA1c level is typically below 7 percent, though individual targets may vary based on age, overall health, and other factors. People without diabetes generally have HbA1c levels below 5.7 percent, while levels between 5.7 and 6.4 percent suggest prediabetes, and levels of 6.5 percent or higher on two separate tests indicate diabetes.
Regular HbA1c testing is recommended for anyone diagnosed with diabetes, typically every three to six months depending on how well blood sugar is controlled and whether treatment plans have changed. The test helps determine if current diabetes medications and lifestyle modifications are working effectively. If HbA1c levels are too high, it may indicate the need for adjustments in medication, diet, or exercise routines. Conversely, consistently low HbA1c levels might suggest risk of hypoglycemia, requiring different management strategies.
Understanding HbA1c results is important because maintaining good glycemic control reduces the risk of diabetes-related complications. Elevated HbA1c levels over time are associated with increased risk of heart disease, kidney damage, nerve problems, and vision issues. However, certain conditions can affect the accuracy of HbA1c results, including anemia, recent blood transfusions, certain hemoglobin variants, and kidney or liver disease. In such cases, healthcare providers may use alternative tests or interpret results differently.
