Blood Cancer Patient Survives Years Beyond Prognosis with Experimental Drug

Prostate-specific antigen, commonly known as PSA, is a protein produced by cells in the prostate gland. The PSA test measures the level of this protein in the blood and is primarily used to screen for prostate cancer in men. PSA levels can be elevated for various reasons, including prostate cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate), prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate), and even normal aging. The test is typically recommended for men over 50 years of age, or earlier for those with a family history of prostate cancer or other risk factors.

The PSA test is performed through a simple blood draw, usually from a vein in the arm. No special preparation is generally required, although some healthcare providers may recommend avoiding ejaculation for 24 to 48 hours before the test, as this can temporarily raise PSA levels. Certain medications and procedures, such as prostate biopsies or cystoscopies, can also affect PSA levels, so patients should inform their healthcare provider about any recent medical procedures or current medications.

PSA levels are measured in nanograms per milliliter of blood. Normal PSA levels typically range from 0 to 4 nanograms per milliliter, though this can vary based on age and individual factors. Levels between 4 and 10 are considered moderately elevated and may indicate a 25 percent chance of prostate cancer. Levels above 10 suggest a higher likelihood of cancer, potentially over 50 percent. However, elevated PSA levels do not automatically mean cancer is present, and conversely, some men with prostate cancer may have normal PSA levels. This is why PSA results are usually evaluated alongside other factors such as age, prostate size, rate of PSA change over time, and results from digital rectal examinations.

When PSA levels are elevated or concerning, additional tests may be recommended to determine the cause. These can include a free PSA test, which measures the ratio of free to bound PSA in the blood, or imaging studies and prostate biopsies. The decision to undergo further testing should be made in consultation with a healthcare provider, who can assess individual risk factors and help patients understand the benefits and limitations of PSA screening. While the PSA test is a valuable tool for detecting prostate cancer early, it is important to recognize that it is not perfect and should be part of a comprehensive approach to prostate health monitoring.
