ADHD Diagnosis Trends: Understanding the Increase in Testing and Detection

Hemoglobin A1c, commonly known as HbA1c or glycated hemoglobin, is a crucial laboratory test used to monitor long-term blood sugar control in people with diabetes. This test measures the percentage of hemoglobin proteins in red blood cells that have glucose attached to them. Because red blood cells live for approximately three months, the HbA1c test provides an average picture of blood glucose levels over the past two to three months, making it more reliable than single-point blood sugar measurements that can fluctuate throughout the day.

The test works by measuring how much glucose has permanently bonded to hemoglobin molecules inside red blood cells. When blood sugar levels are elevated over time, more glucose molecules attach to hemoglobin through a process called glycation. The higher the average blood glucose concentration during the lifespan of red blood cells, the higher the HbA1c percentage will be. This makes the test an excellent tool for assessing how well diabetes is being managed and whether treatment plans need adjustment.

For diagnostic purposes, an HbA1c level below 5.7 percent is considered normal, indicating no diabetes. A result between 5.7 and 6.4 percent suggests prediabetes, meaning blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be classified as diabetes. An HbA1c level of 6.5 percent or higher on two separate occasions indicates diabetes. For people already diagnosed with diabetes, the general treatment goal is to maintain HbA1c below 7 percent, though individual targets may vary based on age, overall health, and other medical conditions.

Healthcare providers typically recommend HbA1c testing at least twice a year for people with diabetes who are meeting treatment goals and have stable blood sugar control. Those who have recently changed their diabetes treatment plan or are not meeting their blood sugar targets may need testing more frequently, often every three months. The test requires a simple blood sample and does not require fasting, making it convenient for patients. Unlike daily blood glucose monitoring, which shows immediate fluctuations, HbA1c testing provides a comprehensive overview of diabetes management effectiveness over an extended period, helping patients and healthcare providers make informed decisions about treatment strategies.
